When Employers start comparing: beat the competition with Truelancer
In our previous post we looked at our new feature: Truelancer Compare, from a client perspective. We discussed at length about how the feature could enable clients and employers to choose from the best of freelancers and assure quality work done.
Today we shift the focus to our freelancers and the benefits they can avail by prepping their profiles for comparison.
This post will tell you how to beat the competition using our tool
Some of you freelancers think that this tool may be a disadvantage for you. It is justified as some of the impending fears which arise mostly relate to questions on how to beat the competition.
There is always the possibility of fresh talent losing out to experience although they may have the same set of skills. With most freelancing sites, clients have to visit the profile of respective freelancers in order to know more about them.
This creates a chance of biased decisions as skills and talent are often looked over and experience attracts immediately. This makes growth difficult for fresh freelance talent who may deliver an even better quality of work. This is also one of the reasons why many people stray away from freelance as it takes time and effort to build your own brand and experience. The work volume can get very meagre in the initial few months of a freelance career.
You may say that the Truelancer Compare tool may further increase the bias and leave you even more bereft!
That cannot be the case! That is because we have modelled the tool based on the idea of levelling the playing field so much so that only the personal skills and relevant experience of any freelancer will account for his chances of getting hired.
Our main aim here is to help you beat the competition based on your own skills and completely eliminate bias
Look at the screenshot of the Truelancer Compare feature in action:
Here are some points to note in this image which are beneficial in eliminating bias:
- Balanced Array of parameters
If you look at all the parameters here then you will see they have equal amounts of qualitative data and numerical data. For instance, there is the hourly rate which shows how much these freelancers charge per hour. Then there is the ‘member since’ parameter which shows relative experience of all freelancers.
Thus, we have not included parameters which present a scope for any bias. The client is bound to see these parameters chose the best option based on the facts and then move to your profile for a more detailed view.
- Direct and Precise Data
The data which you give on your profile can sometimes be too much or confusing for a client. Thus in this tool we crawl over your profile and dig in those facts which are most likely to get you a freelance gig.
These includes dynamic information like the number of projects you have completed, number of services you have delivered, the feedback you have received and the ratings you have received based on what you have done.
This way there is no scope for a person with over 7 years of experience and no substantial work volume on Truelancer to surpass you in getting a freelance gig.
Thus, the feature gives you more power and ability to beat the competition and ensure a regular workflow.
- Data Generated by your input
The data which is shown in these tables is the one you enter when you create your profile and is further based on your Truelancer activity. Thus, ultimately it is you and your set of skills against another and his set of skills and nothing else.
- A comparison of SKILLS only
All the skills which you enlist in your profile are mentioned clearly in this table. This ensures that your entire capability is visible to the prospective employer. The more excellent it is the more chances that you will get the gig.
What can you do to beat the competition using Truelancer Compare
- Perfect your Truelancer profile
The Truelancer Compare tool uses the data which is available on your profile. Therefore, you should take initiative and make it as optimized as possible. You can do this by
- Making a 100% complete profile

- Interact with your clients
Interaction with clients is a great way to keep work coming and also generate a portfolio of good feedback and endorsements. This increases your activity and your ranking on the Truelancer index and consequently in this table too!
- Review your skills from time to time
It is obvious that when you start your career, you have a specific skill-set. As soon as you progress, this set expands. In order for your employers to know that you have more skills which can be used you need to keep updating and reviewing the skills which you have added on your profile.
Freelancers with more diversified skill-sets are the ones who make it big!
- Be Active
Activity ensures clients that you are a regular. This creates a perception that you have regular workflow and are adept with the work processes and requirements in your field. This greatly increases your chances of beating the competition and bagging good freelance gigs.
Freelancing is a great way to take control of both your life and career and make the best out of them. The benefits being so great, call for skills which are great too! Thus, apart from your professional skills, your networking and other soft skills also help you in freelancing… more than you think! Thus keep polishing them.
