Tell us about yourself!
My name is Vishakha Goyal, and I hail from the capital city of India. Delhi has always been home to me since I have lived here my entire life. Languages have forever been a passion, and I have wanted to be a linguist for as long as I can remember. Today, I can say that I know four languages and plan to learn much more as and when I get a chance. I believe that what goes around really does come around and I generally practice honesty and perfection in whatever I do.
Life has taught me many crucial lessons (the hard way and the easy way). One such valuable lesson is that I always stick to my guns and remember that change is the only constant in life. Nothing is forever and the more we try to hold on to something, the harder it is to live life.
My motto in life is:
Why & when did you start freelancing?
I started freelancing in the summer of 2015. I always knew I had a knack for writing and while I was pursuing my post-graduation in English Literature, I figured why not earn a neat side income doing what I’d always loved to do! After months of sending out proposals and seeing them getting rejected, I landed my first content writing job on Truelancer for a guy who really helped hone my skills and instil confidence in my work. Now, I have my own content writing company, Lingoease that is my pride and passion. The rest is history!
What do you like about being a freelancer?
Well, everything! Freelancing, for me, is a full-time job! I like the flexible work hours that I can take on since it doesn’t have to be a regular 9 to 5 job. I like that it gives me the creative freedom to explore my true potential as a writer in addition to letting me pick & choose the kind of work I’d like to take on. The best thing about freelancing is that I am not answerable to anyone. I am my own boss, and the world is my oyster! I can take a break without the hassle of leave applications, and I can quit without the hassle of a two weeks’ notice. But most importantly, I can work from the comfort of my home or while I travel effortlessly!
They say that all you really need is love to live a fulfilling life! In the same vein, for me, all you really need is a laptop with a super-fast internet connection and coffee to be a very successful freelancer. And talent, of course! Let’s not forget that!
What are the challenges you have found in your freelancing career?
Well, as much as I like the freelancing world, it is not without its shortcomings. The biggest one for me perhaps is the relentless hard work that I need to put in each day. In some ways, it’s even harder than a 9-5 job because in this case, I put in more hours. At times, it takes a toll on me, and I think about quitting, but freelance writing for me is a drug. I can never stay away for too long! However, the more I work, the more I seem to grow as an individual, and I think I can proudly say that my work life today, is incredibly rewarding.
What, according to you, does it take to be a successful freelancer?
Talent, persistence, hard work, dedication, honesty and a whole lot of coffee! A few tips that I would like to share with freelancers based on my own experience are:
- Make deadlines your religion.
- Be persistent. Don’t give up too easily.
- Play to your strengths.
- Be open to new opportunities and expand your horizons.
Being a freelancer is a challenging task. Only those who rise to the occasion excel in this field!
How did you get to know about Truelancer?
The know-it-all Google! I came across Truelancer in the month of April 2015 when I was browsing the web for freelancing opportunities. Lo and behold, Truelancer popped up in one of the search results. Truelancer was actually the first freelancing platform I ever joined, and this is where I started my career as a freelance content writer & editor.
What do you think about working on Truelancer?
Wow, Truelancer is like my alma mater. This is where I started, and this is the platform that I give credit to for giving a shape to my future. I still work on Truelancer, and the best thing about it is undeniably its support team. They are super accommodating and helpful in addition to being prompt in moments of crisis. Two thumbs up!
What do you like doing when you are not “freelancing”?
I like travelling, reading romance fiction, writing poems when I’m inspired, sleeping when I’m not! Honestly, being a full-time freelancer rarely gives me the opportunity to “not freelance,” but when I do have some leisure time, I like unwinding with some music or the best of Stephanie Laurens!
