1. What inspired you to start freelancing and when did you begin?
I started freelancing in 2018, October. I always knew I was not cut out for an office job. The creative side of me pushed me to take up freelancing, as I saw people making steady incomes out of Graphic Design as a profession. So, I started my freelancing journey on Truelancer.
2. How many years have you been working as a freelancer?
As a freelancer, I have been working for 4 years precisely. I have extensive experience in graphic design and have built a successful career as a freelancer by providing high-quality work for my clients.
3. What makes you particularly passionate about your skills in graphic design?
I like designing aspects of branding which includes logo and identity, brand guides, company profiles, packaging, etc. My favorite app to use is Adobe Illustrator.
4. What motivated you to pursue a career in graphic design?
I was inclined toward art since childhood. I had many career options to choose from growing up, but I always knew my calling was in the creative field. I love my work and enjoy being a Graphic Designer. It’s more of a hobby than a career for me.
5. Can you share the most essential skills needed to succeed as a graphic design freelancer?
Of course, you need to be good at the software used in the design process. But what is even more important is to have a genuine interest in learning new things and expanding your portfolio. Also, marketing your skills is very important as you can only be called a successful freelancer if you have good quality clients.
6. As a freelancer, what are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome?
Numerous challenges such as not having a steady flow of income on a month-to-month basis, client pitching is tough, creating designs that appeal to specific tastes and preferences of clients, and balancing home and work is challenging, people still have a mindset that not going to work means not working. These are just a few challenges, there are many more.
7. From your perspective, what does it take to be a successful freelance graphic designer?
In order to be a successful Graphic Designer, you got to have a genuine interest in the design field. This is important because it’s your passion that will stick with you in your ups and downs, as freelancing can be tough.
Other than the skillset, communication and punctuality play a significant role in any freelancing business. You gain the trust of your clients through effective communication and timely delivery of projects.
8. What suggestions would you have for someone who is just starting out as a graphic design freelancer?
If you’re serious about becoming a freelance graphic designer, just get started, and learn as much as you can in the areas which interest you. Build a great portfolio even if you have a limited number of designs. Learn the art of pitching clients early on in your freelancing career. Internships are a great way to start learning and also help in building the portfolio.
9. How did you come across the concept of freelancing, and what has been your experience with Truelancer?
I had heard of Upwork. But it was difficult to land projects as it’s very competitive over there. I was disappointed with the kind of jobs I was being offered after completing my design course. I happened to visit Truelancer, the platform while exploring my options, one day. I ended up creating my profile and in no time I started getting projects.
Truelancer has been my main source of freelancing business. It’s trustworthy, and genuine and has been very helpful in growing my business. The coordinators are excellent people and they ensure that every project is carried out smoothly.
