1. What inspired you to start freelancing and when did you begin?
I started freelancing when I discovered the “boom” of many online freelance platforms; they inspired me of being my own boss and working without having to leave home. I began my freelancing journey by building my own online portfolio, highlighting my skills and experience, and reaching out to potential clients. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I quickly found that with the right mindset and approach, it was possible to secure clients and start working on projects.
2. How many years have you been working as a freelancer?
I started freelancing in June 2016, which is now 6 and ½ years ago. It’s been a wonderful journey so far, where I’ve had the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients and projects, and continuously learn and grow as a freelancer.
3. What makes you particularly passionate about your skills in content writing?
What makes me particularly passionate about my skills in content writing is the opportunity it gives me to explore and learn about a wide range of different niches and topics. I enjoy the process of researching and learning new information and then being able to turn that knowledge into engaging and informative content.
Additionally, I find the flexibility of being able to adapt my writing style and tone depending on the project and audience to be particularly exciting and satisfying. Whether it’s crafting a formal white paper or a more casual blog post, content writing allows me to flex my creative muscles and constantly challenge myself to improve my craft.
4. What motivated you to pursue a career as a content writer?
The main motivation that led me to pursue a career as a content writer is my lifelong love of writing and reading. Ever since I was a child, I have been passionate about the written word and the power it has to inform, entertain, and inspire. As I grew older, I realized that content writing would allow me to channel that passion into a career.
I appreciate the opportunity to create informative, engaging, and high-quality content that can help readers find the information they need and avoid typical spam content.
I find it easy and enjoyable to research and write about different topics and to express my thoughts through written words. It was a natural choice for me to become a content writer and I’m happy to be doing something that I enjoy.
5. Can you share the most essential skills needed to succeed as a content writing freelancer?
When it comes to content writing, we have to become researchers, so one important skill is to do deep research from different valuable and trusted resources to find good information.
Another skill, which is related to what I mentioned above, is being able to think critically, i. e., being able to analyze and evaluate existing information regarding a topic.
As a third skill I can mention that when one writes for third parties, time is very important. It is necessary to understand what the client needs and develop the text as soon as possible paying attention to the requirements.
6. As a freelancer, what are some of the biggest challenges you have had to overcome?
A challenge that I have had to face since I started working as a freelancer was the organization. I remember that at the beginning I never said No and that led me to work from Monday to Monday, without holidays or vacations.
Over time I realized that being a freelancer does not mean doing everything the client wants when they want, I was the owner of my time and there I learned that being a freelancer is about establishing working hours like in any other job.
Another challenge was the price of my work. I have faced some clients who have wanted to pay me much less than what I was asking for, even knowing that my prices were always reasonable. It is important to assert yourself.
7. From your perspective, what does it take to be a successful freelance content writer?
To be a successful freelancer in content writing, adaptability is important, i. e., adapting the tone of the writing according to what is going to be written. Also, as I mentioned before, the research for information is key because we cannot give wrong information to the reader in case we are writing a health article, for example.
On the other hand, understanding SEO is essential to be able to write any type of content. Also, it is significant to meet project deadlines and for that, you have to focus and avoid distractions.
I would also like to mention that I focus a lot on maintaining fluid communication with my clients and always being willing to edit the text if necessary; I prioritize the quality of my work.
8. What suggestions would you have for someone who is just starting out as a content writing freelancer?
Some suggestions for those freelancers focused on content writing that I can give are:
Be self-taught, i. e., if you do not understand, for example, about SEO, learn about it by watching videos on YouTube.
Create a portfolio. Choose a particular niche (or several) and write to then show samples to your potential customers.
Always ask your clients for feedback on your samples so that you can improve them later.
Get organized and analyze how many hours it takes you to write a text of X words. This will help you discipline yourself.
9. What suggestions would you have for someone who is just starting out as a content writing freelancer?
I started freelancing after working for a tech company for a couple of months where they basically were using a well-known online freelance platform to develop projects, I realized that I could do the same but from home and without a boss. Around the same time was when I discovered Truelancer while doing google research about the platforms where you could develop an online career.
My experience using Truelancer for all these years has been the best since I have worked with other platforms but none have given me the same satisfaction. Truelancer has a very positive team of administrators who provide support, they have helped me a lot when I have doubts or questions about something. I can’t feel happier, and I plan to continue with Truelancer for many more years.
